IMAGE & UTTERANCE

Looking at the world I delight in much of what I see but can be unsettled by its undertones - thrilled, say, to confront a sea-lion, yet unable to ignore its captivity.  So I'm driven both to take pictures and to write poems.  Digital photography has enabled me to bring together my twin strands of creativeness, making explicit the interplay between an image and its complimentary utterance though the elationship may take a reflective, ironic or narrative character.

Presented here is a selection of my work in progress.  Each piece arose as an independent item.  Text is embedded within the image usually as an overlay but where its seems appropriate inside a framed box.  In many cases having settled on a 'plot' I try out different versions.  The image finally employed can be the outcome of a mini-project that might spread across weeks, just as texts are subject to revision and should I say re-vision?).

In 2008 I was invited to mount an exhibition of this work at the Wells-next-the-Sea Poetry Festival in Norfolk where it aroused much interest.  Leading from this I was awarded an Associate Membership by the Royal Photographic Society in 2009.
